My weapons of choice for my melee hex build were Silverblack Spear for the hoi polloi, since it has a great combination of reach, speed, damage and the awesome partizan moveset. In short, when I've done a playthrough with it, I typically want it with these minimums: +3 upgrade, dark infused, 140 stamina (get second dragon ring, beat Freja ASAP for that), lvl 30+ VIG, 1 atunement slot (via ring or stats), 16 INT & 16 FTH (dark buff), and straids helm (+2 INT/+2FTH) or hexer hood (+1FTH/+1FTH & +1 cast) for a small damage bonus, small increase to the dark buff duration, etc. It's durability is pretty low for PvE, bracing knuckle rings and/or repair power are required, and likely also a backup weapon (there's that dark infused longsword/rapier again) You do damage outside of the sweet spot, but the stamina usage/damage ratio is piss poor when compared to something like a dark longsword/rapier The benefit/necessity of landing attacks with the "sweet spot" for the damage you want is significant. The stamina consumption involved in using it is pretty intense You need petrified dragon bone to upgrade it, which isn't exactly dropping from the sky early/mid game (not to mention that as a hexer weapon you want a darknight stone to infuse it for scaling as well as dark weapon to buff it) It's VERY good, for sure! But it's not that easily utilized early game (ie before Iron Keep), because:
